THE REBELLION
Ahmed Imran & Rehana
Kayal Winterstone hated dark nights, putrid stenches and flowery words, but most of all, it was the dark nights that did him in. It wasn’t that he feared such nights where the moon cowered from the open skies into the black clouds; it was more the fact that they inconvenienced him and forced him to use his Sense. He hurried along the cobbled path, his footsteps shrouded in the silence of night as his cloak billowed out behind him. He increased his pace, a sense of urgency in every step. It was a dark night, the sort of night that folks in Winterland called morbid, where the silence went deeper than the darkness and shadows disappeared into the gloom. It was that sort of night where nobody in their right mind would venture outdoors, and only those with a purpose greater than the inevitability of death stepped out to where death would inevitably find them.
He stopped at a crossroad of cobbled paths, crisscrossing at odd intervals, leading to a plethora of single-storey cottages: all similar in appearance. His gaze sharpened as he stared at each cottage in turn, a sense of something out of the ordinary piercing his consciousness. Something was wrong. He could feel it in his gut.
What was it? Did it mean what he thought it meant? Was He…?
His gaze fastened on a dark patch the size of his palm where there should be none. He wouldn’t have found it had he not been looking for it. He reached into his snug leather trousers to withdraw his TouchRod, stretching it towards the dark patch.
What the…? His thought stopped suddenly, as a soft thud filled his ears. It was not the night for thuds of any sort, he thought, whirling around, gripping the TouchRod tighter, a small transparent glow growing like a cloak over the grooved metal rod.
“Jesus, Kayal. Jumpy much?”
“What the hell! Rickrd? Are you out of your mind? I could have killed you!” Blazing eyes raked over Rickrd, who quailed under the impact of Kayal’s anger. Rickrd’s eyes flickered towards the TouchRod clenched in Kayal’s hand, the cloak that had formed moments ago no longer there. A nervous tic arose on his round face as he took in the extent of Kayal’s rage. That cold, perfect face which looked like it was sculpted by the artists of the old scattered realms, the long, thin scar running along his cheek, the square jaw clenched in anger; it was a face familiar and yet all too different. It was the face of a Protector, and yet not. Rickrd shook visibly, taking in this new aspect of his one-time friend.
“What are you doing here? Were you not at the Telling?” Kayal snapped out.
“Relax, my friend.” Rickrd said. “I just wanted to talk to you, and couldn’t figure out any other way. The Telling left me with more questions than answers, to tell you the truth.”
“It’s too late, Rickrd. I can’t talk now, I have to go.”
